I finally cracked open a bottle of Kohala Bay Punch Brand Jamaica Dark Rum tonight. It’s funky but the taste is not as powerful as it’s aroma. It definitely reminds me of a number of cocktails I’ve tried at the Mai-Kai. It’s a wild rum that runs the aroma gauntlet: caramel, cured meat, light leather, old oak, smelly feet, ChapStick, etc. It would be more interesting as a sipper if it was a higher ABV (maybe 90 proof) just to “punch” it up a bit. Next is to try it in a few cocktail tributes you share on your site.
Aloha Scott, glad you found this rare rum. Indeed it’s not a sipper but an outstanding mixer, especially in The Mai-Kai’s cocktails. It pairs wonderfully with Demerara rums. Apparently the original Dagger was 97 proof and was much beloved. I can only imagine how the drinks tasted with that.
Okole maluna!
