Thanks again to all who listened and voted in our Second Annual Rumcast Fantasy Rum Draft — we reveal this year's champion during the intro for this episode.
After revealing the champion (and a bit of gloating from one of us), we get to our latest experiment: investing 6 inexpensive rums we normally would either overlook or outright reject to see if we could find some diamonds in the rough!
We each selected 3 rums under ~$20 that we had either never tried or couldn't remember trying and then put them through a series of tasting to see if we could find any pleasant surprises along the way.
Despite being lesser known and far less expensive rums, we found a lot worth discussing and hope that you find it worth your time as well. Cheers!

I've been loyal to Count Chocula since 1971, but I had to try this year's new monster cereals after the introduction of the groundbreaking Carmella Creeper (caramel apple with monster marshmallows), a long-lost Zombie cousin of Franken Berry. She's the first ever @generalmills female monster and reportedly the very first female cereal mascot created as a mascot. Carmella is also orchestrating the 50th anniversary of the Monster Mash Remix, a mash-up featuring all the monsters in one box. I'm endorsing both as worthy additions to the classic lineup. Mahalo for your dedication and hard work! … Posted @withregram • @archipelagobardc Back in 2015, a couple guys emptied their change jars, maxed out several credit cards and built a bar they wanted to exist in the world. It was never easy, we didn’t always get it right but we put a lot of ourselves into this space and this thing we created from nothing. It was perfectly imperfect and we will truly miss it and everyone that loved it.

@tropicalstandardbook is an ambitious re-examination of the Tiki cocktail canon, and @garretjrichard hits all the touchstones. It's no surprise that I went straight to The Mai-Kai chapter - after educating myself on the tips and techniques, of course. Though the Derby Daiquiri and Barrel O' Rum were both impressive in their ambition and creativity, I wasn't blown away by the end result. The third cocktail was the charm, however. With Incantation (à la Black Magic), Garret absolutely nails it. The spot-on tribute is big and bold, featuring spicy and rummy flavors in perfect balance. Even more so than The Atomic Grog version, I'll admit. My only consolation is it took some advanced techniques and five rums for him to accomplish that feat. The coffee and rum notes are strong, but it's still very drinkable and refreshing, unlike some other craft versions of Tiki classics. It's not as juicy or tart as our tribute (and the current version served at @the_maikai_restaurant), but I'm confident that this fits perfectly into Mariano Licudine's original mid-century vision. It's well worth the effor to make. Pick up the book (co-written by author @mrbenschaffer) now at TropicalStandard.com and go straight to Incantation (à la Black Magic). I'd like to hear how everyone thinks it compares to our tribute recipe at AtomicGrog.com ... Okole maluna!
