These historic rums are available in the UK and Europe now, coming to the US in early 2021! .... Posted @withregram • @ruminterest This week saw the first of 3 releases in the Appleton Estate Hearts Collection. With the other 2 bottles due for imminent release, it’s a good time to share with you what to expect.

A couple of weeks ago, I was honoured to be invited to the pre release tasting with the legendary Luca Gargano and Joy Spence, where a select few were kindly sent 20cl bottles, of which only 300 of each were produced, to sample during the session. It was an incredible experience and a huge thanks goes out to the @appleton and @velier team.
.
As an introduction, Luca Gargano of Velier describes the Hearts Collection as a dream opportunity to have collaborated with Appleton Estate, the number one Distillery in the world. Within the collection are 3 vintage rums - 1994, 1995, 1999 - all 3 were handpicked by Luca and Joy in a blind tasting and both selected exactly the same vintages and barrels!

The 3 rums are 100% Pot Still and are produced from a single marque and a blend of 12 casks. 2 of the releases come from the same marque and one different. All are tropically aged rums and all are aged in medium char ex Bourbon barrels.

Appleton Estate 1994
- 60% ABV
- Nose - Toasted oak, Coffee, vanilla, butterscotch, smoky orange.
- Palate - complex yet delicately smooth, not overpowered with oak, coffee, vanilla, a honey sweetness at backend.

Appleton Estate 1995
- 63% ABV
- Nose - Orange Peel, toffee, ginger, vanilla, soft oak
- Palate - Spicy fruit, apple tartness, bitter sweet notes, long dry finish

Appleton Estate 1999
- 63% ABV
- Nose - Smoked Coffee, Chocolate, Orange, Banana, a touch of Ginger, soft oak.
- Palate - Subtle Oak, Molasses, Tobacco, coconut, banana.
- Dangerously approachable, rich, notes of spice, vibrant with a beautiful lightness to it.

Our next #tikimugmonday recap of @thehukilau takes us to 2015, the event's first year at the iconic Pier 66 hotel. Our haul was huge that year, starting with the official limited-edition mug designed and produced by @tikidiablo. The mugs, which came in four different glazes and included a special LED torch light (yes, it still works), were inspired and adapted from a design by artist @basementkahuna. Mine is a special fifth glaze given to staff and special guests. Once again, all the merch was commissioned by @tikikiliki, including the new glassware designed by @muhlenkott. Looks like the #polynesianvillageresort refurb is moving along .... Posted @withregram • @cannibal_lounge We were walking around the back side of the Poly the other night and noticed that they have started putting new cross beams back on top of the Great Ceremonial House after removing the original ones. Glad to see them coming back! Not exactly sure why they removed them in the first place. May have been for design reasons or for structural reasons, but it does look like there will be fewer of them. But that signature look seems to be coming back. 😊

The first in a series of posts paying tribute to "things we miss most" about the historic restaurant. Of all the things we miss about The Mai-Kai, one is near the top of the list. No, it's not a delicious cocktail or a piece of amazing artwork or architecture. It's something more experiential, something you can enjoy just once a year ... if you're lucky. It's the intoxicating buzz of the sold-out dinner show during the Saturday night main event at @thehukilau, the Tiki weekender that has called The Mai-Kai home since 2003. Filled with upwards of a thousand hungry Polynesian Pop enthusiasts, the restaurant feels alive and bursting with an amazing energy like you've been transported back in time to Tiki's mid-century heyday for one special night. There's nothing else like it anywhere. You immediately think, "This is what this place was designed for!" Hopefully this experience will return in 2022 if not 2021.
