Inside the 15th anniversary Slammie Awards A total of 86 bands are represented on the South Florida Slammie Awards' 15th anniversary ballot. With 15 categories featuring 15 nominees each, the awards offer a comprehensive look back at the modern era of of the South Florida punk/metal/alternative/indie scene.
Receiving the most nominations are: 7 - Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever, New Found Glory, Nonpoint, Shai Hulud Dashboard Confessional, New Found Glory, Nonpoint and Shai Hulud continue to record and tour the world. New Found Glory relocated to California and Shai Hulud to New York but Dashboard Confessional and Nonpoint still call South Florida home. Further Seems Forever recently called it quits after an influential career as torch-bearers of the area's indie scene. 6 - The Agency, The Groovenics, The Holy Terrors, Load, Marilyn Manson, Raped Ape, Strongarm Marilyn Manson, who long ago moved on to bigger and better environs, is perhaps the area's most recognizable homegrown rock star. A supergroup featuring Dashboard Confessional's Mike Marsh, The Agency remains active with a recently released album. Longtime indie band The Holy Terrors are still alive with a recently released CD featuring old tracks with drummer Sam Fogarino (Interpol). After a long hiatus, Load recently reunited for a 16-year reunion. Strongarm, which morphed into Further Seems Forever after making its mark on the Christian hardcore scene, is reportedly organizing a reunion. The Groovenics and Raped Ape (who long dominated the local scene but disbanded shortly after their first indie label efforts) both called it quits over the past decade. 5 - Against All Authority, Amboog-A-Lard, Irish Car Bomb, Malevolent Creation, Poison the Well, Puya, Radiobaghdad, The Vacant Andys, Where Fear & Weapons Meet Still going strong after 15+ years, punk's Against All Authority and metal's Malevolent Creation exemplify the underground scene with a long string of indie albums and worldwide tours. Harcore band Poison the Well is back on an indie label after a stint on a major. Punk stalwarts Irish Car Bomb continue to record and tour while sister band Radiobaghdad, now nearly 20 years old, still regroups for occasional shows. Latin rockers Puya, who signed a major-label deal after moving from Puerto Rico, released several albums and toured the world before splitting to form other projects. Falling short of major success but producing members who went on to national stardom were Amboog-A-Lard (long defunct) and The Vacant Andys (long dormant but rumored to have a reunion in the works). Where Fear & Weapons Meet were leaders of the hardcore scene for years before its members recently split after numerous albums and tours. Other notable nominations: Drummers Jason Lederman (Against All Authority, Brethren, Cavity, Machine, Shai Hulud, Until the End, Where Fear & Weapons Meet) and Chris Goldbach (Against All Authority, Collapsing Lungs, Irish Car Bomb, Malt Liquor Riot, Middle Finger Mob, Radiobaghdad) lead the parade of musicians who played in multiple bands. Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever), Chad Gilbert (New Found Glory, Shai Hulud), Goldbach and Chad Neptune (Strongarm, Further Seems Forever) each played in two of the Most Important Band nominees while Lederman played in three. Unsung hero John Owens holds the distinction of fronting three bands that "should have made it big, but didn't" - Anchorman, Seville and The Vacant Andys. Of the 15 nominees for Best Live Music Club, only five remain: Churchill's, Culture Room, Ray's Downtown, Respectable Street and Revolution. Following is the full band list with links.
