Lazar pioneered the concept of organic and eco-conscious pizza with <A HREF=\"https:\/\/www.pizzafusion.com\" TARGET=\"new\">Pizza Fusion.<\/A><\/p>\n<p>Kapow! is inspired by New York City noodle bars featuring communal Asian comfort food with a gastro-style influence.<br \/>\nThe menu will feature &#8220;fresh and sustainable&#8221; pan-Asian noodles and dim sum items plus craft cocktails in a edgy atmosphere. Much of that edge has been provided by South Florida artist <A HREF=\"https:\/\/www.poochisland.com\" TARGET=\"new\">Mike &#8220;Pooch&#8221; Pucciarelli<\/A>, who painted an incredible mural that spans one entire wall. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Pooch created the painting in his studio (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slammie.com\/atomicgrog\/images\/pooch_kapow_mural.jpg\" title=\"Pooch's Kapow! painting\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a> to see the full artwork) on a 20-by-60-inch canvas. It was then photographed and enlarged into &#8220;a big sticker,&#8221; Pooch said, and placed on the wall. The partners acquired land nearby to grow herbs for cocktails and dishes, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The 1,600-square-foot space in the heart of Mizner Park was built with reclaimed wood, energy-sustaining appliances, and other eco-friendly measures, Lazar told <I>New Times<\/I>. &#8220;It means a lot to us to leave a small footprint on the environment.&#8221; Among the &#8220;eco-initiatives&#8221; featured in Kapow! are water-efficient woks and restrooms, repurposed bar tops and tables, and reclaimed wood floors.<\/p>\n<p>Lazar said he embraced the chance to work with the &#8220;visionary&#8221; duo of Mayo and Frielich: &#8220;Not only are they passionate and laid-back, but nine out of nine times, they have the focus and the resources to see things through. (Photo from KapowNoodleBar.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One change since that article was published in September: Kapow! decided not to use cocktail consultant <A HREF=\"https:\/\/alambiq.com\/aboutus.aspx\" TARGET=\"new\">Freddy Diaz<\/A> (one of my opponents in <A HREF=\"https:\/\/www.slammie.com\/atomicgrog\/blog\/2011\/04\/30\/we-be-jammin-rum-renaissance-zombie-fest-at-the-mai-kai\/\" TARGET=\"new\">last April&#8217;s Zombie Jam<\/A>) and is instead receiving mixology guidance from its distributor, <A HREF=\"https:\/\/www.southernwine.com\" TARGET=\"new\">Southern Wine &#038; Spirits<\/A>. I hope they&#8217;re up to the task.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Kapow! added another influential name to its marquee when it named Roy Villacrusis as executive chef. He&#8217;s the creator of the innovative small-plates menu at <A HREF=\"https:\/\/www.dirtymartinipalmbeach.com\" TARGET=\"new\">Dirty Martini<\/a> in Palm Beach Gardens and owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/kubo-asiatic-cuisine-north-palm-beach\" target=\"_blank\">Kubo<\/a> in North Palm Beach. Villacrusis cut his teeth as head sushi chef at Mark&#8217;s in CityPlace, and also worked at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He won the Palm Beach Food &#038; Wine Festival&#8217;s Grand Chef Throwdown last December, as well as numerous &#8220;best chef&#8221; and &#8220;best restaurant&#8221; honors.<\/p>\n<p>Villacrusis&#8217; brand of &#8220;Asiatic Cuisine&#8221; will form the basis of the new menu at Kapow! And, of course, we will work hard on making sure the flavors are to be remembered and hopefully loved.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Not only will Kapow! be a hot spot for lunch, happy hour and dinner, but it will also be a go-to destination for late-night comfort food. The owners have plans to stay open until midnight on weekdays and 2 a.m. on weekends. <\/p>\n<p>I have high hopes for Kapow!, just as I do for Mayo&#8217;s most recent venture on Clematis Street in West Palm Beach, Longboards. <A HREF=\"https:\/\/www.slammie.com\/atomicgrog\/blog\/tag\/longboards\/\" TARGET=\"new\">[See The Atomic Grog&#8217;s past coverage]<\/A> Kapow! is a great concept and hopefully will be embraced by Boca Raton and South Florida.<\/p>\n<p>This will be the prolific Mayo&#8217;s 15th restaurant\/bar\/nightclub venture and he shows no signs of slowing down. We&#8217;ve discovered that he recently shut down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/the-lounge-west-palm-beach\" target=\"_blank\">The Lounge<\/a>, which shares a space with Longboards, in preparation for converting it into a bistro. Jim's roots in mid-century and retro culture go back to his childhood in the 1960s, when he tagged along with his parents to Tiki restaurants and his father's custom car shows. His experience in newspaper journalism and more than 20 years as an independent concert promoter have given him a front-row seat in the South Florida scene since the 1970s. He promoted hundreds of rock, punk, and indie concerts under the Slammie Productions banner since the early 1990s. A graduate of the University of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications in 1983, Jim was a longtime editor and web producer for The Palm Beach Post before his retirement in 2022. He earned his nickname by virtue of both his dangerous exotic drinks and his longtime position overseeing tropical weather coverage in his stormy home state. Jim now spends his time mixing cocktails, attending events and writing stories for this blog, which launched in 2011.
