In a state built on tourism, there’s a remarkably broad history of Tiki culture spread across Florida’s history books. From spectacular resorts to roadside dives, the legacy is rich with diversity.<\/p>\n

The 21st century revival brought a creative new wave of authentic Tiki that Floridians continue to ride today, from events to new bars and restaurants. Are we in the midst of a new golden era of Polynesian Pop, or is the best yet to come?<\/p>\n

Tiki Gardens, a 12-acre tropical wonderland in Indian Rocks Beach, was a Florida’s flagship Tiki attraction for nearly 25 years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Journalist and pop culture enthusiast Jim “Hurricane” Hayward of The Atomic Grog blog will connect the dots between the past, present and future in a multimedia presentation that celebrates Florida’s rich and colorful affair with Tiki culture. The Florida Tiki seminar will take place at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, the final event of a whirlwind weekend that will conclude later that day with the annual Magical Tiki Meet Up<\/a> at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Polynesian Village Resort.<\/p>\n

Hayward has documented 150 Tiki locations, from the 1930s to today (including two that will be part of Sunday’s meet-up). This includes resorts and roadside attractions, bars and restaurants, hotels and resorts, apartments and condos, retail outlets, and more. The seminar will break these down not only by category, but also by eras covering nearly 90 years of history.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a>
A 24-page booklet featuring a comprehensive list of every Tiki venue in Florida history will be distributed during the Tiki-a-Go-Go seminar on March 29.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Guests attending the seminar will get several special treats, including 1961 home video footage of several vintage locations that has never been seen before (thanks to Tim “Swanky” Glazner<\/a>). The presentation will include new images and information on historic venues, plus the latest updates on future projects in the works.<\/p>\n

As an added bonus, the first 50 attendees will receive a 24-page booklet that documents all of the past and current Tiki sites. This professionally designed encyclopedia is full of photos, descriptions and details on each location’s lifespan. Thanks to Glazner and researcher\/writer “Tiki Tom” Duncan for their assistance, plus Susan Hayward (Mrs. Hurricane) for the design.<\/p>\n

There will also be a raffle to win new glassware created by Christie “Tiki Kiliki” White (The Tapa Room<\/a> \/ Magic City Tiki Weekend<\/a>) featuring logos of vintage Florida venues. Before you head off to the Magical Tiki Meet Up, be sure to stop by for an enlightening look at the state’s under-appreciated Polynesian Pop history.<\/p>\n

Florida Tiki Trivia<\/h3>\n

Did you know that Florida was a hotbed of Tiki during the Golden Era (1930s-1970s)? We’ve identified more than 100 vintage locations and continue to find more. Here are just a few teasers to some of the things you’ll learn during the seminar:<\/p>\n

• World War II era singer and actress Frances Langford opened the Tiki-themed Outrigger Resort and restaurant with her husband in Jensen Beach in 1961. It closed in 1988, but the building remains as a restaurant and includes a display of Langford’s photos and memorabilia from the Outrigger.<\/p>\n

• The two oldest Tiki resorts in Florida (opening in 1950 and 1952) both had “Castaways” in their name. Both are long gone.<\/p>\n

\"Moon<\/a>
Moon Islander, a waterfront restaurant featuring Polynesian touches, was a hangout for astronauts at nearby Cape Kennedy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

• Amid the 1960s space race and Apollo missions, the Moon Islander restaurant was built in Titusville with views of Cape Kennedy and the rocket launches.<\/p>\n

• Sarasota’s Bahi Hut (est. 1954) is widely recognized as Florida’s oldest Tiki bar still open, but there’s another Tiki-adjacent bar in St. Augustine that has been around since 1945.<\/p>\n

• Besides the Mai-Kai (est. 1956), only two other restaurants remain open from the Golden Era. Both opened in the 1970s, one in Key Biscayne and the other in St. Augustine.<\/p>\n

In addition to documenting the vintage sites, the seminar will include detailed statistics that chart Tiki’s rise, fall, and resurrection during the 21st century. Did you know there are currently more than 50 Tiki locations in the Sunshine State, including 30 that were added during the past 15 years? Here are some more interesting facts that we discovered in our research:<\/p>\n

\"Tahiti<\/a>

• Tahiti Gil’s Fare Mananui in Kissimmee and The Kondo-Tiki in Tampa, BnBs that opened in 2020 and 2023 respectively, are the first new Polynesian-themed rentals since the 1970s.<\/p>\n

• Fueled by a trend of speakeasies opening inside existing venues, 26 new Tiki locations have launched in the 2020s. At least three new bars and restaurants are in the works.<\/p>\n

• Of the 150 Tiki locations we documented since the 1930s, there are 56 still open. That’s a 37% success rate, not bad in tourist market that always demands something new.<\/p>\n

Those final numbers demonstrate the enduring appeal and durability of Tiki and Polynesian style, which we’ll celebrate all weekend. See you at Tiki-a-Go-Go!<\/p>\n

Retired to the Tiki lifestyle after a career in journalism, Jim “Hurricane” Hayward has closely documented both the cocktails and the restoration of the historic Mai-Kai restaurant in Fort Lauderdale for nearly 15 years. A South Florida resident since the mid-1970s, he has witnessed both the de-evolution of mid-century style tourism and the emergence of the modern Polynesian Pop renaissance.
