Organizers of The Hukilau are asking attendees of the 12th annual Polynesian Pop weekender to come up with a signature drink for one of their new rum sponsors. <\/p>\n

\"Deadhead<\/a><\/p>\n

The Hukilau’s Deadhead Rum Cocktail Contest<\/B> is open to any paid ticket-holder. The winner will receive:
\n* A “Headhunter’s Ritual” on Friday, June 7.
\n* A $150 gift certificate from The Mai-Kai.
\n* And a complete set of The Hukilau’s 2013 glassware.<\/p>\n

Rules are posted on the official Facebook page<\/a>. The winning drink will be served at The Hukilau official after party on Friday, June 7, at midnight. The final three contestants will be chosen the week of April 8, so aspiring mixologists need to get their entries in soon.<\/p>\n

Cocktails will be judged on the recipe, garnish, presentation and the name. Contestants must use Deadhead Rum in their final recipe. The drink submitted to qualify for the top three doesn’t necessarily need to be the final recipe. Finalists will be sent a bottle of Deadhead Rum and will be able to fine-tune or revamp their entry. The winning entry will be announced on The Hukilau’s Facebook page on May 1.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Deadhead Rum,<\/A> a new craft rum from Mexico bottled in a distinctive shrunken head, is one of The Hukilau’s new sponsors. The rum, aged a minimum of six years in sherry casks, is a blend of spirits distilled from molasses as well as freshly pressed sugarcane juice from the nearby agricultural regions. The rum is said to be equally suited to both sipping and mixing. It features a bouquet of coffee, chocolate, allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg, which carry through to the palate along with cloves, anise and caramel. Look for more on this up-and-coming rum in future blog posts.<\/p>\n

Joining Deadhead Rum as a new sponsor in 2013 is Ron Diplomatico<\/A>, a rum produced by the largest distiller in Venezuala. Other sponsors include Fee Brothers<\/A>, The Mai-Kai<\/A>, Tropic<\/a> magazine<\/I><\/A>, Tiki Magazine<\/A>, and South Pacific Promotions<\/A>. Sponsorships are still available. Jim now spends his time mixing cocktails, attending events and writing stories for this blog, which launched in 2011.
